Pick the exit first. Then pick the line.That order is the opposite of how most riders learn it. It is also the habit that separates a clean lap from a slow-speed crash on an adult electric off-road motorcycle. An electric dirt bike sends torque to the rear wheel the instant your wrist moves. No clutch to slip. No engine note climbing to warn you. So the line you commit to has to be a line you can leave.
Read the traction. Choose the line. Confirm it has a way out. In that order.
The Short Answer on Line Choice
- Read the surface before the corner, not while you are in it.
- Traction first, line second, exit third. That sequence does not change.
- Wet roots, glazed rock, and loose-over-hardpack cause most trail-speed offs.
- One rut or straddle both. Half in and half out is how riders get thrown.
- Momentum beats power over broken ground. Roll the throttle, do not stab it.
- No visible way out means it is not a line yet.
Why Instant Torque Changes Line Choice
Riders coming off gas bikes carry habits that do not transfer. Most of them depend on the engine speaking first.
Torque Arrives Before You Ask For It
A geared motor multiplies torque low in the rev range. The EM-5 Pro is rated at 177 lb-ft and the EM23 at 184 lb-ft. The current EM5 Ultra is rated higher at 203 lb-ft, so the EM23 should not be described as the strongest model in the full range. Even 177 or 184 lb-ft can break a damp-root contact patch before the rider finishes correcting the line.
Treat the throttle as a steering input. Not a speed dial.
The Sound Cue Is Quieter and Easier to Miss
A gas engine often gives an obvious rise in engine note before or during wheelspin. An electric drivetrain is quieter, although the tire can still be heard and felt through the pegs and bars. Learn those cues on low-consequence ground; do not wait for a loud warning that may arrive after the tire has already moved.
Low Weight Cuts Both Ways
Low-mounted battery mass can make the bike feel settled, but traction on a loose climb still depends on how the rider loads both tires. Use a neutral standing position, keep the arms loose, and shift only enough to maintain front steering and rear drive. Throwing the hips far back can unload the front and make the chosen line harder to hold.

Off-Camber Turns and Where the Grip Hides
Off-camber means the trail tilts away from your turn. Instinct says drop inside and hug it. Usually wrong. The higher line holds more packed dirt, because water and traffic have not sorted the loose material up there yet. Find the darker, tighter band and put the front tire on it. If the high line is already blown out, take the inside and accept a slower exit.
Inside Line, Outside Line, High Line
When the Inside Line Wins
Packed dirt on the inside. That is the whole test. Firm ground inside shortens the corner and gets you back on the power sooner. On loose or freshly ridden ground the inside is where the marbles collect, and the same line costs you the front end.
When the High Line Wins
Berms, off-camber corners, anything cut into a slope. Higher gives you a banked surface to push against and a longer look into the exit. It costs distance. That matters less than most riders think.
The Braided Line You Should Not Take
Braiding is what happens when riders keep dodging one wet spot until four parallel ruts replace one trail. It looks like the smarter line. It is how trails get closed. Keep the tires on the existing tread even when the tread is the worse surface. A slower lap is cheaper than losing the trail.
Obstacles: Ruts, Roots, Rocks and Logs
Ruts and Root Crossings
In a rut, look where the rut goes. Not at its walls. Eyes down means front wheel into the wall. Hold a light steady throttle so the bike tracks rather than climbs. For roots, square them up and stay off the brakes across the top. Weight the outside peg so a small slip stays small.
Rock Gardens and Log Hops
Rock gardens reward momentum and punish speed. From the entrance, pick the flattest string of contact points you can see. Stand up. Let the suspension work under you instead of fighting it through the bars. Logs need a deliberate rear-wheel lift and a clean run-in, so if the approach is wrong, roll past and reset. The riders who stay upright are the ones willing to abandon a bad attempt.

Expert view: the mistake we see most often Riders scout a line for the obstacle, then find there is nowhere to go on the far side. A committed rut ending in a blind bend. Before committing, say out loud where the bike will be three seconds after the obstacle. If you cannot say it, you have not chosen a line. You have chosen a gamble. |
Pick the Exit Before You Pick the Line
Most trail advice stops at the obstacle. That is the half that photographs well and the half that matters less.
What Counts as an Exit
- Somewhere the bike can run out straight without hitting anything.
- Ground firm enough to brake on, rarely the same ground you just crossed.
- A sight line long enough that a hiker coming the other way is not a surprise.
- Room to put a foot down. On a slope, room on the uphill side.
- A second option, in case the first is occupied when you arrive.
If a line has no exit, stop and walk it, or turn around. That is not caution. It is the decision an experienced rider makes, only earlier.
Ride Modes Are a Line-Choice Tool
A lower ride mode can make pace easier to manage on wet roots or a technical descent because it reduces the available speed ceiling. Do not assume every mode changes throttle mapping in the same way; that behavior is controller- and model-specific. Use the lowest familiar mode that gives enough drive, then keep wrist movement small.
The numbers make it obvious. The EM-5 Pro runs 26, 40 and 52 mph modes. The EM-5 runs 22, 32 and 40. The EM23 runs 16, 28 and 43.5. On tight singletrack the top mode does nothing for you except make the first inch of throttle travel expensive. Use the ladder as built.
What the Hardware Under You Changes
Two riders on one trail will correctly pick different lines, because the bikes place the front tire differently and track ruts differently. Worth knowing which side of that you are on.

Age ratings are not interchangeable. The EM-5 is rated 13 and up, the EM23 16 and up, and the EM-5 Pro 18 and up, adults only.
Wheel Size and Front-Tire Placement
A bigger front wheel rolls over a square edge instead of stopping against it. That widens the set of lines open to you. The EM23 carries a 19-inch front wheel, the EM-5 Pro a 17-inch, the EM-5 a 14-inch. On a root ladder that difference decides whether the direct line is available or you go hunting for a softer entry angle. Small wheels are not a flaw. They want a more selective rider.
Rear Suspension and Rut Tracking
The EM-5 and EM-5 Pro run adjustable air at the rear, 1.6 in and 2.0 in of stroke. The EM23 runs dampers with 2.8 in. More stroke settles a rutted straight. Adjustable air lets you set the bike for your weight instead of the factory average. Seat height matters as much, because dabbing confidently changes which lines you will try at all. The EM-5 sits lowest, a 28.3-inch seat height against 31.5 in on the Pro and 31.9 in on the EM23.
One caveat on water. The EM-5 and EM-5 Pro are IPX6, the EM23 is IPX4, a lighter-duty rating. Neither is a submersion rating. Standing water is a line to route around.
Legal Lines: Where You Are Allowed to Put the Tire
The best line on the ground is worth nothing if the route is closed to you. Riders skip this part. It is the part that ends access.
Designated Routes and Vehicle Class
On national forest land, motor vehicle use is limited to the roads, trails and areas shown on that forest's Motor Vehicle Use Map. The Forest Service is explicit that routes not shown on the map are not open to motor vehicle travel. The map also sorts routes by vehicle class, including trails open only to motorcycles, which is single track. Under 36 CFR 261.13, operating outside those designations is prohibited, with a short list of exemptions such as emergency and authorised use. On BLM land the agency asks riders to obey posted signs and stay out of fenced closures, notes that vehicles must be registered with the state where required, and expects an approved spark arrester and a muffler meeting state noise limits.
Legal Does Not Mean Prudent
A route can be legally open to your vehicle class and still be the wrong route for your tires or skill that day. The Forest Service also warns that designated routes may carry no sign on the ground, so the current map—not visible tread—is the authority. Valtinsu models are sold for off-road use; any public-road eligibility depends on the exact origin document, equipment, and jurisdiction.
Gear Is Part of the Decision
BLM guidance is blunt about helmets. NHTSA is specific about which ones count: a compliant helmet carries a label reading DOT and FMVSS No. 218, CERTIFIED. Novelty helmets sold with fake labels will not protect you. Off-road styles use an extended chin bar and visor and expect goggles. A rider in proper kit takes better lines, because being wrong costs less.
What We Will Not Publish, and Why
Plenty of trail guides hand out universal numbers. We do not. The numbers are model specific, and getting them wrong damages the bike or the rider.
- No universal tire pressures. Correct pressure depends on the tire, the load and the surface.
- Sag percentages and preload settings stay out. Set the rear air suspension from your own manual, for your own weight.
- Chain slack, clearance and fastener torque values belong to one model each. A forum number is not a specification.
- Nothing here suggests bypassing or defeating a brake cutoff or any other safety input, whatever a video shows you.
All of it lives in your model's user manual, the only place we will send you for setup figures.

- Hardpack: use the compacted band, but watch for loose gravel sitting on top.
- Saturated trail: avoid widening the tread around puddles or soft ground; choose another route if needed.
Practical tip: The shiny or pale surface is often the low-grip layer; look for the darker, scrubbed band.
How should you cross roots, ruts, and rocks?
Approach roots as squarely as the trail allows, commit to one rut, and carry controlled momentum through rocks.
- Roots: reduce braking before the contact and keep the bike calm across the slick surface.
- Ruts: look where the rut goes, not at its walls.
- Rocks: stand, keep the hands light, and choose a connected series of tire contacts rather than one perfect stone.
Practical tip: If the approach is wrong, reset before the feature instead of adding power halfway through it.
When is a high or outside line better than the inside line?
Use the high or outside line when it offers firmer soil, a larger turning radius, or a longer view of the exit.
The inside line wins only when its surface is compact and the shorter radius still leaves traction. On off-camber corners, loose material often collects low while the upper band stays packed. Stay inside the established tread; never create a new high line through vegetation.
Practical tip: Pick the line with the best exit, not the one that looks fastest at the apex.
What should you do when a line has no safe exit?
Do not ride it as planned. Stop early, walk the feature, choose another line, or turn around.
A safe exit needs firm enough ground to brake, enough sight distance for another trail user, and room to put a foot down or stop. Legal access does not make a line prudent, and quiet electric power does not remove the need to yield.
Practical tip: Carry the current land-manager map; visible tire tracks are not proof that a route is open.
