  1. Set entry speed on stable ground. Finish the major speed reduction before the gradient steepens. Enter slow enough to read surface changes without immediately asking for maximum braking.
  2. Cover both brake controls. Keep them in easy reach with a relaxed grip. Do not ride with hands positioned in a way that costs you steering.
  3. Build pressure progressively so the tires can develop braking force. Abrupt lever input can exceed available grip and lock a wheel.
  4. Coordinate front and rear. Both brakes contribute. Available grip at each end shifts constantly with gradient, surface texture, steering angle, and load transfer, which is exactly why a fixed 70/30 split is a bad instruction. Reject any universal ratio.
  5. Reduce braking demand across poor grip. Do more of the slowing on supported ground. Ease off abrupt inputs over wet roots, rolling rock, and deep loose material.

Body Control: Stay Mobile, Not Locked Back

"Lean all the way back" is the most repeated descent instruction online. Also the most misleading. It comes from bicycle content, where the rider is a large share of the total package. On a motorcycle, going too far rearward lightens the front tire, costs steering authority, straightens your arms, and makes lever modulation harder at the moment you need it most.

Position responds to the machine, the grade, the braking load, and the front grip you actually have.

Start Centered, Low, and Loose

Bent knees. Bent elbows. Feet stable on the pegs, neutral grip, eyes up the trail. Limbs absorb movement without collapsing under it, and hips move relative to the chassis as the slope changes instead of freezing into one downhill pose.

Keep Useful Load on the Front Tire

The front tire steers and does much of the slowing. It needs load to do either. A vague or skipping front end is a stop-and-diagnose signal, not proof that you have gone too far rearward. Loose surface, tire pressure, tire or rim damage, wheel or steering play, a brake fault, fork condition. Any of those produces the same feeling.
